Italian alcoholic beverage “Peace of Hiroshima” to go on sale next year

by Michiko Tanaka, Staff Writer

Bottega, an Italian distillery, will produce and sell an alcoholic beverage with Hiroshima in its name, starting next year, in an effort to help convey the wish for peace of the A-bombed city to the world. Conceived as a benefit project, the company will donate all profits from the sales of this product to the City of Hiroshima. Sandro Bottega, 51, the president of the company, spoke about his plans with Kazumi Matsui, the mayor of Hiroshima at Hiroshima City Hall on November 6.

The “Peace of Hiroshima” beverage is held in a 500-milliliter bottle. At the bottom of the bottle is a glass ornament in the shape of a dove. The beverage will be sold at airports in the world with a card that explains the history of Hiroshima. The price has not yet been fixed. The City of Hiroshima will make use of the donated funds for its peace activities.

Located near Venice, the company brews sparkling wines and a distilled alcoholic drink called grappa, and also makes bottles. According to Mr. Bottega, he visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum for the first time in November 2013 and was deeply moved. This life-changing experience led to the “Peace of Hiroshima” initiative.

When Mr. Bottega met with Mr. Matsui, he said he would like to help convey Hiroshima’s message of peace more widely. He offered the mayor a sample of the drink and gave a special 13-liter bottle of this beverage to the city. Mr. Bottega also made a donation of one million yen.
