A-bomb survivors and antinuclear groups release statements after North Korean nuclear test

by Jumpei Fujimura, Staff Writer

On January 6, following the announcement by North Korea that it had conducted a hydrogen bomb test, the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations (Nihon Hidankyo) and other antinuclear groups released statements to protest the nuclear test.

In its statement, Hidankyo condemned North Korean’s actions, stating that the test was a foolish act which runs completely counter to global efforts to eliminate nuclear weapons. The group also demanded that other nations, including Japan, not respond with force but rather address the situation with reason.

The Japan Council against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs (Gensuikyo) issued a statement that said, “The test is a serious challenge to the wishes of people all over the world who seek the abolition of nuclear weapons. We strongly protest North Korea’s repeated reckless acts.” The Japan Congress against A- and H-Bombs went on to say that the test was unacceptable because it heightens tensions in Northeast Asia and threatens peace in the world.

The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear weapons (ICAN), a non-governmental organization (NGO), released a statement which says that the group is opposed to any form of nuclear test and calls on governments to ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT.)
