On March 1, Hiroshima University, located in the city of Higashihiroshima, announced that it has concluded a cooperation agreement with PERSADA, the association of former international students from Indonesia who have studied in Japan. In line with the agreement, the university and the group have established a joint project center at PERSADA’s head office in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. The joint project center will help enhance the network of local alumni, acquire more international students for the university, and promote student exchange activities.

PERSADA’s head office is located on the campus of Darma Persada University. Mitsuo Ochi, the president of Hiroshima University, visited the school and signed the agreement on February 11. Mr. Ochi also attended an opening ceremony for the center. No staff from Hiroshima University will be allocated to the center, but cooperation from PERSADA staff will be utilized for the center’s work.

PERSADA was established in 1963 to build a bridge of friendship between Indonesia and Japan. It has created a strong network by setting up 15 branch offices across Indonesia.

The agreement moved forward when Ginandjar Kartasasmita, 74, PERSADA’s advisor, assumed the post of External Councilor of Administrative Council at Hiroshima University in April of last year. In addition, the late Raden Muhammad Hasan Rahaya (who passed away in 2014) , a founding member of PERSADA, was an international student from Indonesia and experienced the atomic bombing when he studied at the Hiroshima University of Arts and Science, the forerunner of Hiroshima University. Mr. Rahaya received an honorary doctorate from Hiroshima University in 2013.

Toshiyuki Sato, the vice president of Hiroshima University, said, “We hope to make use of PERSADA’s network and enhance our strength.” The university also signed an agreement on student exchange with Darma Persada University.
