Conveying reconstruction of A-bombed city at International Conference Center Hiroshima

by Gosuke Nagahisa, Staff Writer

On April 9, the council charged with promoting the meeting of foreign ministers, a body formed of public and private entities, opened the “Hiroshima information transmission center” at the International Conference Center Hiroshima, in Naka Ward, in conjunction with the meeting. The history of Hiroshima’s reconstruction after the atomic bombing, as well as the manufacturing technology of local companies, will be shared with government officials and press personnel from Japan and abroad until noon on April 12.

The international media center, the hub for press from Japan and overseas, opened at the International Conference Center on April 9. The “Hiroshima information transmission center” has been set up in a corner of the second basement of the same building. On display are 48 photo panels that show images of the A-bomb ruins and the municipal stadium in Naka Ward after it was built, which became a symbol of the city’s revival.

There are also rooms where visitors can listen to accounts of the atomic bombing from survivors and from “memory keepers” of these experiences. “Memory keepers” are citizens who have undergone training organized by the City of Hiroshima to help hand down A-bomb accounts to younger generations. David Mareuil, 44, who is from France and works for a news agency in Turkey, heard one account from a “memory keeper.” He said that everyone should listen to A-bomb accounts and learn about what happened.

Products produced by 11 manufacturers in Hiroshima Prefecture, along with costumes of kagura, a traditional form of theatrical dance, are also on display. Green tea is being served by the members of Ueda Soko Ryu, a school of tea ceremony.
