by Kyosuke Mizukawa, Staff Writer

On April 28, the City of Hiroshima announced the outline of the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Exhibition to be held in Ise, Mie Prefecture, in May. The exhibition is timed to coincide with the Group of Seven (G7) summit, which will be held on May 26 and 27 in the prefecture. The 24 artifacts on display will include personal belongings of students who were killed in the atomic bombing while laboring for the war effort. In addition, an A-bomb survivor will speak about the atomic bombing. The city will send letters, urging the leaders from the G7 nations to visit the exhibition.

The exhibition will take place from May 22 to 29, including the days when the summit is held, at the Ise Tourism and Culture Center. The atomic bomb museums in Hiroshima and Nagasaki will send 12 items each. These will include a school uniform and a water flask which belonged to students who were killed in the atomic bombings, and a replica of a charred tricycle. Thirty-four panels in Japanese and the same number of panels in English will provide such information as the effects of radiation on human health.

Sadao Yamamoto, 84, who was a second-year student at Hiroshima Second Middle School (now Kanon High School), will recount how he experienced the atomic bombing while working as a mobilized student at a location 2.5 kilometers from the hypocenter.

The exhibition is sponsored by the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The Peace Promotion Division of the Hiroshima municipal government believes that the A-bomb exhibition will help government officials and news media from other countries learn more about the horrors of the atomic bombings, with the aim of increasing momentum for the elimination nuclear weapons.
