Thank-you letter from Obama, for comic book about city’s revival after A-bombing, arrives in Hiroshima

by Junichiro Hayashi, Staff Writer

A letter of thanks from U.S. President Barack Obama for a comic book entitled Hiroshima’s Revival - Remembering how people overcame destruction and despair arrived at RCC Broadcasting Co., Ltd. on September 26. Copies of the comic book were presented to the Group of Seven (G7) summit leaders by the City of Hiroshima and RCC Broadcasting in May of this year.

The letter said, “By connecting across borders and cultures and holding firm to these ideals, we can move toward a future of greater peace and prosperity,” and ended with President Obama’s signature.

The comic book depicts a variety of Hiroshima citizens and the efforts they made to reconstruct the city after the atomic bombing. The Japanese version of the comic book was published in the summer of 2015 as part of a project organized by RCC Broadcasting, and in March 2016, the English version was published under the title Hiroshima’s Revival. Through Japan’s Foreign Ministry, the City of Hiroshima and the broadcasting company presented the comic books to some 20 leaders and representatives who visited Japan to take part in May’s Group of Seven (G7) summit (Ise Shima summit) to help the leaders understand Hiroshima.

To date, thank-you letters have also arrived from the Prime Minister of Canada and the European Commission President of the European Union (EU).
