by Hiroaki Watanabe, Staff Writer

On November 16, representatives of the Mylai Peace Foundation in Vietnam visited the Peace Memorial Park in Naka Ward, Hiroshima. They will make use of their observations in order to build a park in Vietnam that will commemorate the victims of the Son My massacre, which took place during the Vietnam War, and inspire prayers for world peace.

A total of 13 representatives of the organization, including Tuong Ngoc Thuy, 64, the chairperson, visited the park in Hiroshima. At the International Conference Center Hiroshima, they listened to an official from the Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation explain how the facility is managed, then they toured the Peace Memorial Museum. Mr. Thuy said, “We were able to learn a lot. We would like to continue our exchange with the people here.”

The Son My massacre took place in the Mylai hamlet of Son My village, Quang Ngai province, in March 1968. In the tragedy, 504 unarmed civilians were killed by U.S. Army soldiers. The organization was established as a private foundation this past October. The group is making preparations to construct the Mylai Memorial Park at the site of the massacre, which will include a cenotaph, museum, and conference center.
