Mayors for Peace sends letter to 193 nations to urge participation in negotiations for treaty to ban nuclear weapons

by Kanako Noda, Staff Writer

With negotiations to discuss a treaty to outlaw nuclear arms starting at United Nations headquarters in New York on March 27, Mayors for Peace sent an open letter to 193 U.N. member countries on March 14, encouraging all nations, including nuclear-armed states and those under the nuclear umbrella, to take part in the negotiations. Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui serves as president of Mayors for Peace.

The letter says, “… not only can nuclear deterrence fail with unacceptable humanitarian consequences, it offers no effective solution to the global security challenges we face.” It calls on world leaders to “show their decisive leadership in planning for their security without reliance on nuclear weapons.”

The letter continues, “The international community must join forces and discuss how we can address real issues through building mutual confidence,” and stresses the importance of discussions. It also calls for “the effective legal prohibition of nuclear weapons.”
