Former U.S. President Obama will not attend Mayors for Peace conference

Mayors for Peace, for which Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui serves as president, reached out to former U.S. President Barack Obama in March and requested that he attend the organization’s general conference this August in the city of Nagasaki. The Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation, which serves as the secretariat of Mayors for Peace, has reported that Mr. Obama responded in mid-April and declined this request. Mr. Obama added, however, that he appreciated the invitation.

Yasuyoshi Komizo, the secretary general of Mayors for Peace, had met with an official of the Obama Foundation in Washington, D.C. in March and handed a letter which requested that Mr. Obama deliver a keynote speech at the conference.
