Peace Watch Tower reset to protest North Korea’s sixth nuclear test

by Kyosuke Mizukawa, Staff Writer

Following North Korea’s sixth nuclear test, the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum reset the “Peace Watch Tower” located in the lobby on the first floor of the museum’s east building on September 3. The clock displays the number of days since the last nuclear test was carried out, and with this reset, the number displayed changed from 359 to 0.

After operating the switch of the clock, Kenji Shiga, 64, the director of the museum, said, “Every time I reset the clock, I always hope that this will be the last nuclear test. I feel very sorry for the fact that North Korea doesn’t fully understand what would happen if nuclear weapons are used. Nevertheless, we must continue to call on North Korea not to test or use nuclear weapons.”

The Peace Watch Tower was installed on August 6, 2001, and every time a nuclear test is conducted somewhere in the world, the display is reset to zero to protest the test. This is the 24th time that the display has been reset and the first since the previous nuclear test conducted by North Korea on September 9, 2016.
