On October 19, Mayors for Peace, for which Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui serves as president, announced that the organization has delivered a message to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which was named the winner of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize. In its message, Mayors for Peace praised ICAN’s contribution to the establishment of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and congratulated it on winning the award. ICAN is an international non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Geneva, Switzerland. The two groups will seek to strengthen their collaboration in their efforts to call on the nuclear nations and the nations relying on the U.S. nuclear umbrella to take part in the treaty.

In addition to holding a discussion with officials of Geneva, a member city of Mayors for Peace, Yasuyoshi Komizo, the secretary general of Mayors for Peace, visited the ICAN office and met with Beatrice Fihn, the group’s executive director, on October 18. The message to ICAN was written in English and signed by Mr. Matsui. It welcomed the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize to ICAN by stating, “The hibakusha of Hiroshima and Nagasaki rejoice at the news of this prize being awarded owing to, as you have recognized, the long-term joint efforts made by hibakusha and the like-minded members of ICAN.”

In addition, in order to urge the leaders of nations to pursue a policy of joining the treaty, the message also said: “Mayors for Peace would like to further promote collaboration with ICAN and its members to achieve our common goal. Your kind understanding and cooperation will be highly appreciated.”

According to the office of Mayors for Peace, Ms. Fihn also expressed her desire to make efforts to have nuclear nations join the treaty, and agreed to strengthen their collaboration. Mayors for Peace has more than 7,400 member cities around the world, and is one of ICAN’s international partners.
