Mayors for Peace distributes Joint Appeal for further negotiations on nuclear disarmament

NEW YORK — On May 10, at the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty Review Conference, held at United Nations headquarters in New York, Mayors for Peace (for which Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui serves as president) distributed a Joint Appeal for next year’s NPT Review Conference. As there were sharp clashes of opinion among the countries taking part in the Preparatory Committee, the Appeal from Mayors for Peace strongly urges all nations to deepen their dialogue in order to advance the cause of nuclear disarmament.

In its Joint Appeal, Mayors for Peace recognizes the NPT, in which some 190 countries and regions are participating, as “one of the most important treaties of the post-World War II era.” Given the current situation in which the nuclear weapon states and non-nuclear weapon states are locked in disagreement over their efforts to advance nuclear disarmament, Mayors for Peace urged them to seek innovative solutions to make concrete steps toward this goal through earnest dialogue that can transcend their differences. The Appeal also mentions the existence of the hibakusha, or the survivors of the atomic bombings, who wish for the abolition of nuclear weapons, and urges the participating nations to turn confrontation into cooperation.

The Appeal was distributed to the representatives of all participating countries at the assembly hall. It was also handed to the Chairperson of the Third Preparatory Committee, Syed Mohamad Hasrin Aidid, by Jackie Cabasso, an executive advisor for Mayors for Peace. Ms. Cabasso hopes that this simple humanitarian message will be effective in dealing with the diplomatic challenges that lie ahead.
