by Yo Kono, Staff Writer

“The parliamentarians’ association to promote relief to the A-bomb survivors” of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) held a general assembly at the party’s headquarters on November 7, and changed its name to “The parliamentarians’ association to promote relief to the A-bomb survivors, the abolition of nuclear weapons and the realization of lasting world peace.” They will expand their efforts to include the abolition of nuclear weapons, in addition to supporting A-bomb survivors.

In the general assembly, Takeo Kawamura, president of the association (and a representative of the third district of Yamaguchi), said, “A-bomb survivors are aging. We will need to address measures for A-bomb survivors and the abolition of nuclear weapons as a unit.” Tsutomu Tomioka, vice president of the association (and a representative of the first district of Nagasaki), and Hiroshi Hiraguchi, secretary general of the association (and a representative of the second district of Hiroshima) attended the assembly with others and decided to change the name of the association.

The association has requested the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare strengthen support measures for A-bomb survivors. It will call for the abolition of nuclear weapons and make requests to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in order to promote peace education.

In the general assembly, regarding relocation of the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) whose costs were not covered in the fiscal 2020 budget request, an official from the welfare ministry said, “The relocation has to contribute to the activities of the RERF in the future.”
