On September 10, the City of Hiroshima announced that Hiroshima Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba appealed for the abolition of nuclear weapons through Twitter, a popular micro-blogging service, along with U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and others.

Mayor Akiba is visiting Mexico to attend the 62nd Annual Conference for Non-Governmental Organizations. Responding to a request from the Department of Public Information of the United Nations, the organizer of the conference, the mayor wrote a Twitter message in English: "The only role for nuclear weapons is to be abolished! Hiroshima and Nagasaki are the proof. WMD--We Must Disarm!" Mr. Ban wrote, "Because the world is overarmed & peace underfunded. U can set the priorities straight-join WMD campaign."

Mayor Akiba will deliver a speech on September 11, the final day of the conference. He is also seeking a meeting with Secretary-General Ban.

Twitter is a social networking service which enables users to interact with other users globally by sending short messages of up to 140 characters.
