by Kenichiro Nozaki, Staff Writer

On November 7, Mohammad Younas Nawandish, the mayor of Kabul, the Afghan capital, paid a visit to Hiroshima Governor Hidehiko Yuzaki at the Hiroshima Prefectural Office to offer his thanks for a program organized by the Hiroshima Office of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) which receives trainees from Afghanistan.

The mayor said, “Kabul is in the process of reconstructing the city from a time of war. The reconstruction of Hiroshima serves as a model for our efforts.” Since 2003, the UNITAR Hiroshima Office has coordinated a training program in which about 300 government officials and others from Afghanistan have come to the city to study its reconstruction in the aftermath of World War II and its development. As the Hiroshima prefectural government is a supporter of UNITAR in Hiroshima, Mr. Nawandish wished to express his gratitude to the governor.

Mr. Yuzaki replied, “I hope your visit to Hiroshima will deepen your feeling for the importance of peace.”

The same day, the Kabul mayor also met with Hiroshima Mayor Kazumi Matsui. Mr. Nawandish arrived in Japan on November 4, at the invitation of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
